What they are01

What are Chinese skullcap and oat straw in SciatiEase?

Chinese skullcap and oat straw in SciatiEase are 4:1 extracts, listed third and fourth in the 50 mg herb blend. The skullcap comes from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis; oat straw is the green stem of the oat plant.

Chinese skullcap is a traditional herb in Chinese medicine. Oat straw has a long folk history as a tonic for tiredness and stress.

The label prints neither amount and names no measured plant compound.

Blend math02

How much skullcap and oat straw is in SciatiEase?

SciatiEase holds at most 16.7 mg of Chinese skullcap and at most 12.5 mg of oat straw per 4 capsules. Those are ceilings worked out from the blend order.

A proprietary blend lists its parts from most to least by weight and only needs to show the total (eCFR, 21 CFR 101.36). Skullcap sits third in a 50 mg blend, so it cannot weigh more than a third of it. Oat straw, in last place, cannot weigh more than a quarter.

An even four-way split would give each herb 12.5 mg; the true split is not published.

Chinese skullcap3 of 416.7 mg8.3 mg12.5 mg

A worked example: the one oat study used single doses of 800 mg (Kennedy et al., green oat 2017). Even at its ceiling, a full serving holds about 1/64 of that. Every printed line is on the SciatiEase supplement facts page.

Skullcap and the liver03

Can skullcap cause liver damage?

Skullcap has been linked to rare cases of liver injury, including at least one case of acute liver failure. The NIH LiverTox database rates the link as likely but uncommon (LiverTox, Skullcap).

Most of those cases involved products that mixed several herbs. Some skullcap products also turned out to contain germander, an herb known to harm the liver (LiverTox, Skullcap).

The Chinese species in SciatiEase is a different plant from American skullcap. It may also affect the liver, but a 2019 review found no convincing proof that it causes injury (LiverTox, Skullcap).

Warning signs04

What liver warning signs mean you should stop SciatiEase?

Stop SciatiEase and call your doctor if you notice yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools or pain under the right ribs. Unusual tiredness, nausea or itching with no clear cause also count.

These signs have many causes, and a supplement is only one of them. A simple blood test can check your liver quickly.

  • Yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes
  • Dark, tea-colored urine or pale stools
  • Pain or fullness under the right ribs
  • Tiredness, nausea or itching that will not go away

Oat straw05

Does oat straw help nerves or sciatica?

No study has tested oat straw for nerves or sciatica. The one trial we found measured short-term thinking speed and memory, not pain.

In that study, healthy adults aged 40 to 65 took one dose of a green oat extract. The 800 mg dose made them faster on timed tasks and gave fewer errors on a word recall test (Kennedy et al., green oat 2017).

That is a single small result for a different goal at a dose about 64 times the ceiling in SciatiEase. Safety data for oat straw extracts are also thin.

Oat straw comes from oats, and oats are often grown or milled near wheat. The images we have show no gluten statement for SciatiEase, so the answer is not stated; ask the order desk at +1 (844) 361-1273. More on labels and quality claims is on SciatiEase testing and quality.

Ask first06

Who should ask a doctor before taking skullcap in SciatiEase?

Anyone with liver disease, or who already takes other herbal products, should ask a doctor before taking the skullcap in SciatiEase. Most reported liver cases involved several herbs at once (LiverTox, Skullcap).

Pregnant or nursing women and anyone under 18 should not use SciatiEase without a doctor's advice. The same goes for people whose doctor watches their liver tests.

Lower concern

  • Healthy liver and no other herbal products
  • Willing to watch for warning signs in the first 3 months

Ask first

  • Hepatitis, fatty liver or past liver injury
  • Several herbal supplements at once
  • Pregnant, nursing or under 18

The formula07

Why are skullcap and oat straw in the SciatiEase formula?

The label does not explain them; they are small traditional herbs at the end of a 50 mg blend. Together they hold at most about 29 mg, next to 500 mg of PEA.

They are the least studied lines on the panel. Compare all twelve in the SciatiEase ingredients list.

FAQ08

Skullcap and oat straw in SciatiEase: questions

How much Chinese skullcap is in SciatiEase?

The label does not print it. Chinese skullcap is third in a 50 mg blend, so it can be at most 16.7 mg per 4 capsules, or about 8.3 mg in 2. An even split of the four herbs would be 12.5 mg each (eCFR, 21 CFR 101.36).

Can the skullcap in SciatiEase cause liver damage?

It is possible but rare. Skullcap products have been linked to uncommon liver injury, mostly in multi-herb products, and the Chinese species in SciatiEase is less clearly linked (LiverTox, Skullcap). Stop and call a doctor if you notice yellow skin or dark urine.

Is Chinese skullcap the same as American skullcap?

No. Chinese skullcap is Scutellaria baicalensis, a different species from American skullcap. Most liver reports involve skullcap products in general, and a 2019 review found no convincing proof that the Chinese species causes liver injury (LiverTox, Skullcap).

How long after starting skullcap can liver problems appear?

Reported cases began 1 to 12 weeks after people started a skullcap product (LiverTox, Skullcap). Watch most closely in the first 3 months of SciatiEase. Ask your doctor about a liver blood test if you have any doubt.

Should people with liver disease avoid the skullcap in SciatiEase?

Ask your doctor first. Skullcap has been tied to rare liver injury, and a liver that is already strained has less room for error (LiverTox, Skullcap). Your doctor may suggest a baseline liver test before you begin.

Does the oat straw in SciatiEase help nerves?

There is no evidence that it does. The only study we found tested single 800 to 1,600 mg doses of green oat extract for short-term memory and speed, not nerves (Kennedy et al., green oat 2017). SciatiEase holds at most 12.5 mg.
