What Is a Proprietary Blend on a Supplement Label?

Quick answer

What is a proprietary blend? A group of ingredients listed under one name with a single combined weight. The maker does not have to show each amount, only the order, from most to least by weight. SciatiEase has a 50 mg herb blend of four extracts per 4 capsules.

What is a proprietary blend and why do brands use one?

What is a proprietary blend? It is a set of ingredients shown as one line with one total weight. Brands say it protects a formula.

The parts must be listed in descending order of weight (eCFR, 21 CFR 101.36), but each amount is not required.

How does the math of a blend work?

The order of the list caps each part. If four herbs are listed from most to least, the herb in place k can hold at most the total divided by k.

For the 50 mg SciatiEase blend, that gives a ceiling for each herb. An even split is 12.5 mg each.

Feverfew50 mg12.5 mg
Passionflower25 mg12.5 mg
Chinese skullcap16.7 mg12.5 mg
Oat straw12.5 mg12.5 mg
The catch

The total hides each split.

Why do hidden amounts matter for safety and value?

Hidden amounts matter because you cannot compare them with any studied dose. Feverfew has been studied for migraine, and passionflower can cause drowsiness (NCCIH, Feverfew) (NCCIH, Passionflower).

How can you judge a blend before you buy?

Judge a blend by its share of the label and by what else is printed. Count the lines with an amount: 8 of 12 here.

Ask for per-herb amounts. Keep taking prescribed medicine. More is on the ingredients page.

Where can you see the full SciatiEase label?

The full label is typed out on the supplement facts page. Packs are 3 bottles for $177 or 6 for $294, with a 180-day guarantee.

FAQ01

Questions about blends

Are proprietary blends legal on supplement labels?

Yes. Federal rules let a maker show one total weight and list the parts in weight order, without separate amounts. Legal does not mean easy to compare.

Can a proprietary blend hide a tiny dose of an ingredient?

It can. The weight order gives each part a ceiling but never a floor, so one herb may be just a few milligrams. Ask the maker for amounts.

How do you tell if a blend amount is meaningful?

Compare the total with the serving and with studied doses. A 50 mg blend split four ways leaves roughly 12.5 mg per herb, far below amounts used in most trials.
