How to Read a Supplement Study: RCT, Placebo and NNT in Plain Words

Quick answer

How to read a supplement study: find the type, the people, the dose, the comparison and the result size. An RCT with a placebo group is the strongest single design. A study of an ingredient is not a study of a finished product such as SciatiEase.

How to read a supplement study: what do RCT, placebo and NNT mean?

How to read a supplement study starts with the RCT, a randomized controlled trial: people are assigned by chance to the supplement or a placebo. A placebo holds no active ingredient.

NNT is the number needed to treat for one extra person to improve.

What does a real supplement trial look like?

A good example is the PEA sciatica trial: 636 adults took 300 or 600 mg a day for 3 weeks. Pain fell from 7.1 to 2.1 on 600 mg, against 6.6 to 4.6 on placebo (Keppel Hesselink, J Pain Res 2015).

A reanalysis put the NNT at 1.7 (Cruccu et al., PEA sciatica 2019). The trial used micronized PEA, and the SciatiEase label does not say which form it uses.

Coral bars: what 2 or 4 capsules hold, from the Supplement Facts panel. Green bars: daily amounts of that ingredient alone in studies; the light extension shows a range. Studies tested single ingredients, mostly in diabetic neuropathy or back pain, not SciatiEase.

What can a study not tell you?

A study cannot tell you about a product it did not test. No trial of SciatiEase exists.

Alpha-lipoic acid probably has little effect on symptoms at 6 months (Cochrane, Alpha-lipoic acid 2024).

FAQ01

Questions about reading studies

What makes a supplement study reliable?

Look for random assignment, a placebo group, a clear dose, enough people and a published plan. One small study is a hint, not an answer.

Does a significant result mean a supplement works well?

No. Significant means the gap was unlikely to be chance, not that it was large. Check the size of the change, not just the label.

What is a Cochrane review in plain words?

It is a systematic summary of all good trials on one question, using fixed rules. It often finds weaker evidence than single studies.
